Blu Cigs is a popular electronic cigarette company, specializing in beginner e-cig starter kits and cartridges. Several high-profile celebrities have endorsed the brand in the past, including the Hollywood actor Stephen Dorff who can be seen in a promotional spot advertising the company.
Jenny McCarthy, actress, comedian and panelist on the ABC daytime television talk show The View, has also featured in a recent promotional campaign for the company.
With all that hype you’d think Blu is the “ultimate” e-cig on the market, but that’s not quite the case. There are a few drawbacks you should know about before buying into the hype!
I’ve been using my Blu e-Cigs Original and Premium starter kits for about two weeks and have put them through our rigorous testing to see how they stack up against the competition. Read my review of Blu Cigs below to find out the results.
Blu eCigs Company background
Blu was one of the earliest players in the game. They started out in 2008, when there were only a handful of good companies selling ecigs. At that time, they were still using the 3-piece system, which was pretty horribly designed. You’d have to screw in your atomizer (the part that heats up the liquid) into your cartridge to get it working. Now of course, we have the 2-piece cartomizers (atomizer + cartridge = cartomizer) for the beginner style e-cigs.
Blu electronic cigarette was probably the biggest name back then, and they still are today but they now have bigger competition with great brands such as GreenSmoke and V2 taking big chunks of their market share.
Lorillard, the 3rd biggest tobacco company in the US, bought out Blu eCig for $130M in 2013 but the company is still managed by the same people who started it. The partnership has raised some concerns for e-cig consumers though. Some people are worried that tobacco companies could start getting involved in the manufacturing process of e-cigarettes, which could possibly be a bad thing for all of us. We all know tobacco companies can’t be trusted, but what about Blu?
For now let’s put the politics aside and stick with the review.

Vapor production and battery life
Blu’s vapor production isn’t the “best” in the industry but it’s certainly good enough for any new vaper. It closely resembles smoking, which is a big advantage for smokers making the switch to ecigs.
One drawback is that the tip of the cartridge gets hot after continuous use (for me it was about 20-40 consecutive puffs). It does, however, cool down rather quickly so it’s not a major issue (but something they should improve upon).
The vapor that is produced when an individual inhales on one of the e-cigarettes manufactured by Blu Cigs is of the highest quality and is never harsh or damaging to the throat.
Each battery can last up to three days before it requires another charge, although this will depend on how frequently the device has been used, and how much water vapor has been generated. The battery can be charged via a wall adapter or USB charger, both of which are small enough to keep in a small bag or pocketbook, handy if you are away from home, such as at work or on vacation.
A blue LED on the electronic device will light up if the battery is running low, reminding individuals that they need to charge their device. Customers can also purchase a number of accessories directly on the Blu Cigs website.
Variety of Blu Cigs starter kits: Premium 100, Premium, Original
The Blu Cigs Starter Pack contains all the relevant equipment that you will need if you are switching from another brand or are trying electronic cigarettes for the first time.
A USB charger, battery, car charger, instructional guide, carrying case and cartridges are all provided with the starter kit, and flavored e-liquid can be purchased to use with the device. Flavors include tobacco, designed to replicate the taste of conventional cigarette brands, and menthol, which provides a fresh and minty flavor.
For those who want to opt for something a little less traditional, there are a number of fruit-flavored varieties, including cherry and vanilla. Cartridges can be replaced through the company’s online store or at a number of retailers across the United States and abroad.
If you’re just starting out, I’d recommend going with the Blu Cigarette Original kit. It’s $20 cheaper than the premium kit (and $25 cheaper if you use this blu e-cigs coupon) and you won’t be missing out on much.
Customers who have a promotional discount code can save money on their purchase and will be prompted to enter the code prior to entering their payment details during the checkout process.
For customers who have a technical query or simply want to know how to make the most out of their electronic device, they can contact a company representative directly on the Blu Cigs website by filling in a contact form.
The company can also be reached by phone, or via their YouTube channel, which includes a number of customer testimonials, how-to guides and recent promotional spots. There are a number of offers and discounts throughout the year, such as during Christmas and at Thanksgiving.
If an order is made at one of the retail locations throughout the United States, or directly on the blucigs.com website, customers can take advantage of a one year warranty. A form will need to be filled out in order to obtain a refund and this can be downloaded directly from the company’s website and then sent to them in the post.
BluCigs accepts a number of different payment methods when making a purchase and an electronic receipt will be sent to the customer’s email address after their order has been placed.
- Great cartridge flavors (some of the best I’ve tasted)
- Nicely designed and packaged
- Reasonable prices for kits and cartridges
- Smart Pack technology let’s you find nearby stores quickly
- Light-weight and easy to carry around
- Good vapor production
- Lack of a strong throat-hit (could be a turn-off to heavy smokers)
- Currently offers only 6 flavors (would be great to see more flavors)
- Battery life is lower than other brands I’ve tried
- Tip of the cartridge gets hot after 20-40 puffs
- Does not offer e-liquids
I had higher expectations from a million dollar e-cig company with years of history in the e-cig market. Blu Cigs offers a solid product but some of the drawbacks could be a big turn-off to heavier smokers. Overall, if you’re trying to cut back on smoking or switch to ecigs completely, Blu will get the job done but there are other brands that far exceed Blu’s quality.
