The Vision

• Provide program support for talented students committed to education as a long-term profession;

Purpose

To prepare future educators through a variety of academic and cultural experiences that enhance leadership and professionalism, build greater awareness of the social context of schools and ensure quality teachers for all students.

Goals

• To provide an academically and culturally enriched experience beyond the regular university teacher preparation program.

• To provide opportunities and experiences that develops leaders and decision-makers.

• To provide opportunities for understanding education in a greater social context.

• To nurture a sense of mission, service, and professionalism in Teaching Fellows.

Funding

• The program is funded through a variety of sources, including a Career Ladder grant from the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Bilingual and Minority Language Affairs and annual funding through the Commission on
Teacher Credentialing's Paraprofessional Teacher Training Program.

• Funding is on a year-to-year basis and is contingent upon continued grant funding.

• Applicants should apply for other financial aid through the University's Financial Aid office. Other grants may add to the funding received through Teaching Fellows.

Teaching Fellows Commitment
  • Complete a minimum of 30 units per year toward the BA and Teaching Credential.
  • Work a minimum of 10 hours per week in a paid or volunteer position as a teacher's aide, tutor, or similar employment in a school. Program staff will assist with referrals.
  • Participate in the Teaching Fellows Academy, which meets one Saturday per month, September through May. Three units of credit are earned.
  • Maintain a 3.0 grade point average each semester.
  • Participate in Teaching Fellows special activities and events.
  • Accept a teaching position in a local school district upon completion of a teaching credential and teach a minimum of two years.

NOTE: Those who choose not to teach upon completion of the baccalaureate degree and/or teaching credential are required to repay the amount paid by the Teaching Fellows program toward tuition and fees. A legal agreement form will be signed by each Teaching Fellow upon entering the program.
